Like the man who was worthy of such a city

Constantine P. Cavafy (1863-1933) was a Greek poet/civil servant and native son of Alexandria whose work was promoted in the English-speaking world by T.S. Eliot and E.M. Forster. Forster included his poem "The God Abandons Antony" in his own guide to Alexandria. Durrell would discover Cavafy when he arrived during the Second World War.

Cavafy was quite prolific and the Ancients were a cherished theme, with titles like "A Byzantine Nobleman in Exile Composing Verses", "In Alexandria, 31 B.C.", and "Nero's Deadline".
