Cleopatra's Needles

Cleopatra's Needles are obelisks that actually predate her but they were set up in her Caesareum, hence the name. I find it odd that the Egyptians were willing to part with them given the relative scarcity of ruins in Alexandria.

London

In 1819, Egyptian Khedive Muhammad Ali gave one to the British to commemorate the Battle of Alexandria (1801) and the Battle of the Nile (1798). They didn't want to pay for its transportation but a private citizen with deep pockets eventually sponsored it in 1877. The ship sank in a storm but they recovered the obelisk which now stands in London.

Having heard that the British got one, the Americans decided they needed an obelisk too. They pestered the Khedive to offer it as a gift and it arrived without incident in 1880.
